SAINLAND - THE SOLAR CITY

Arindam: - Uff, I think that 2010 will break the record of 2009, in terms of becoming the hottest year of the decade. It is so hot, that today in this episode of ‘WINE WITH ARINDAM’ in your favorite Royal Bengal Tiger (RBT) TV Channel; we have decided to drink chilled beer instead of red wine. Viewers, you must be thinking that why Arindam is suddenly anchoring this program outside his studio. Well, then let me tell you that our entire team is now in “SAINLAND – THE SOLAR CITY” of India. Now, viewers; please don’t ask me the meaning of a solar city. The innovator and implementer of this solar city is just standing beside me, drinking Kingfisher Strong Beer. His name is Mr. Sain. Mr. Sain, our viewers want to know something about this solar city, Sainland, which has been named after you only.

Mr. Sain: - Hmm….Solar city is a city, which runs entirely on solar energy. The electricity is generated by solar photo-voltaic cells. In the terraces and balconies of every building in this city are having solar trays. Come with me; let me show you the solar trays. Look at these trays. Each tray contains 20 photo-voltaic cells. If you keep a photo-voltaic cell under the sun for around 8 hours, then it is capable of producing 900 watt power. Therefore, a solar tray produces 900*20= 18000 watt after getting heated for 8 hours. In every building terrace, we have kept 30 such trays. So, every day, by using solar energy, a building can use 18000*30 = 540000 watts, that is, 540 Kilo-watt. It is not always evident that the residents of the building will consume 540 kilo-watt in a day. Say, in a building, there are 5-storeys and in each storey, there are two separate flats. So, there are 10 different flats with 10 different families. For 10 families, at least 540/10= 54 Kilo-watt is allotted. The powers which are not consumed, remains stored in the Solar Power Box. If in the next day, it is a rainy day; then this backup is more than sufficient for you. All the solar trays are water-proof. So, in a rainy day, you don’t need to keep cover on them. In the next sunny day, all the waters on its surface will again get dried up.

Arindam: - Hmm…there is no pollution in this city, as you are using solar energy. I am seeing all the vehicles plying within this city are not running on petrol and diesel but on solar cells.

Mr. Sain: - Yes, you are right. Also, we don’t give permit to any petrol or diesel driven car. Like in your case only. You came to visit this city in a 4-wheeler car, which runs on petrol. The security men as well as policemen of this Sainland city blocked you at the entry check-post of this city. You just parked your car in a parking zone outside this city and then availed a solar energy driven 4-wheeler car inside Sainland city. We don’t allow any non-solar vehicles to enter inside our Sainland city, to prevent pollution.

Arindam: - You are using solar energy in this city, which is good, but, are you not using other energies like Wind energy or Hydro power?

Mr. Sain: - At present, we are using solar energy to generate wind energy and it produces more electricity. Look at the northern part of this city. There are 10 Wind turbine towers. There are four blades at the top of each tower. If there are any storms or speedy winds, then it starts rotating. Also, we use solar energy to rotate those blades in clockwise direction. For rotating the four blades of each Wind towers in its maximum speed for 12 hours a day, around 600 Kilo-watt is used. In return, a Wind Tower generates 2800 kilo-watt after rotating its blades for 12 hours a day. Therefore, in each day, we are giving in 10*600 = 6000 Kilo-watts to produce 10*2800=28000 kilo-watts. So, per day, we are gaining 22,000 kilo-watts on consumption of 6000 kilo-watts. Hence, we never have any shortage of power even in the rainy season, because every day, we are gaining the energy by using back-up solar energy to generate power from wind energy.

Arindam: - That’s really great. Our planet is becoming greener now. Thanks to Solar Energy and its superb applications. Our ‘Surya Devata’ (Sun God) is just great. Thanks to you Mr.Sain for sharing all these things in our show. Viewers let me chill out with this beer and I will be on a long break. See you later, till then, goodbye.
